September 11 – Ten Years Later

On the 1 year anniversary of September 11, I sat down and wrote an article. I mainly wrote it for me and for my grandparents, but my grandmother loved it so much that she submitted it to several newspapers - unbeknownst to me. It was published in a few of them, and I was really surprised and grateful to her for doing that. Now that the 10 year anniversary is here and my kids brought home questions about where I was when September 11, 2001 happened, I dug up the article and decided to share it with all of you as well as update it a bit. So, here is the original article as well as an update at the bottom. I hope you enjoy it.

Since I wrote this article, many changes have happened in my life and in this country. The article is about September 11, but it’s also about my grandfather, our military, and our veterans. In the 10 years since September 11, 2001, I have lost both my grandmother and my grandfather – both of whom were solid rocks in my life. I have a bigger family, a different career, and I am a totally different person than who I was 10 years ago. On September 11, 2001, I had a job interview at 9 am. Did I make it? No. How would it have gone if I had? I am not sure. Would my life be any different? I am not sure. But I do know that day changed me as it did every other American in the world. My feeling about our veterans have only gotten stronger, especially after seeing first hand how the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan effect both our military service men and women as well as their families back here at home. I think they do not get even close to the care and compassion and respect that they deserve and it makes me ill sometimes. But – that aside, here is my original article from the 1 year anniversary of September 11, 2001.

I have always known that my grandfather is a great man. He’s a great family man, a great American, a great patriot. From the first memories I have of him, I have always wanted to make him proud.

As a teenager, my grandfather joined the mighty U.S. Navy. He was there on that infamous day when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. He watched as his pals, his friends, his brothers-in-arms, fought and fell at his side. He continued to serve bravely at Okinawa, Leyte Gulf, Saipan, Iwo Jima, and many others. My grandfather boxed Golden Glove in the Navy, could tie a knot faster and stronger than anyone I’ve ever seen, and always – always – kept his word. Everyone who knows him, knows what an honest, strong, brave, great man he is – and they respect him for it.

But, my grandfather is also the greatest family man as well. He has been married to the same lovely woman for over 55 years, raised four children along side her, only to lose two of them within six months of each other. He always knew the best tree, and the best boards, for the best tree fort. He always sat through the tea parties and the “Beauty Parlor” (where I would put those wonderful plastic barrettes in his hair). He taught me patriotism. He had all of us convinced that he knew everything and everyone… and I’m still not sure that he doesn’t know it all. My grandfather has been there with perfect words of wisdom exactly when they were needed… even when we didn’t think so at the time.

Never have I seen this great man falter in anything. Not in his faith, his words, his family, his actions, or his patriotism.

Never.

As I drove down the expressway this morning, I knew what today was. I prayed for every family who felt loss all over again today. Every child who lost parents, every parent who lost children. Every person who’s loved ones or friends were not there to come home to, every life cut short one year ago today. I thought that I fully understood what patriotism meant, I really did.

But, as I passed the two car dealerships by the Arkansas River, I saw the most breathtaking sight I had ever seen – those two glorious American flags lowered to half mast. While watching those beautiful flags fly proud in the breeze, I was rocked by a memory.

Once again, I was sitting in my grandparent’s house, on their fireplace, dressed in my favorite suit, ready to drop off my son and head to a job interview one year ago this morning. My grandmother and my (then two-year-old) son, were playing on the patio. I can still hear my son’s sweet, innocent giggle. My grandfather sat in the recliner about a foot away from me. I can still smell his coffee that was in the mug on the table next to us.

Together, side by side, we watched, spellbound, as one great tower spewed smoke and flames. We watched as that second plane hit. We watched as people jumped from buildings because they knew there was no way out. We watched as our mighty Pentagon bore a gaping hole straight through.

And then, in complete horror, we watched as one tower, then the other collapsed.

After the smoke cleared, and I found the ability to move again, I looked over at my grandfather – hoping for some of those great words of wisdom that he always had. A pat on the arm, a hug, a reassuring smile – anything.

Instead, there were tears in his eyes.

I watched those towers fall, and all the lives lost that day – something I never thought I would see. I also watched something else that I never knew possible – I watched a single tear slowly trace it’s way down that brave, wonderful man’s great, strong cheek.

In that one tear, I witnessed the pain, the anguish, the sacrifice, the courage, the strength, and the loyalty of freedom. The things that my grandfather and every other American military veteran who has ever served, fought, or died for this great country has endured.

In that one tear, and in those two breathtaking flags (that my grandfather salutes every time he drives by), I realized just how many freedoms and wonderful blessings we take for granted.

So, as I drove to work, did my job, picked up my son, and headed home, doing daily things – I noticed too many things that I’ve never really stopped to appreciate before.

Things like the way the morning air smells when the sun is streaming around you. The way everyone sings in their car on their way to wherever they are going because they are sure no one can see them. The way new paper smells. The way a man looks at a woman he truly loves when she doesn’t know he’s watching. The way my son’s freshly shampooed hair smells. The way his little eyes sparkle when he laughs. The way kids play “airplane”. The way everyone’s face lights up when it’s such a beautiful day outside, with the sun shining and the birds singing and not a cloud in the sky. The way a child says “I love you”.

The feeling you get driving down the road, watching in the rear-view as your child salutes every American flag he sees because “grandpa does it”.

The way that I can lay my head down tonight and know that I am free, and that my son is free, and my family is free, and my friends are free – and everyone I passed today is free, and you, dear reader, are free.

All thanks to people like my grandfather.

People who gave up so much, and all too often everything, for people they didn’t even know, and probably would never meet, and generations still yet to come. For each and every one of us to be free.

As I sit here writing this, listening to the soft music of my son’s snoring coming from the couch, I am sadly reminded of all the families who’s loved one’s did not come home one year ago today. My heart aches for every single person – every mother, father, sister, brother, grandmother, grandfather, son, daughter, aunt, uncle, cousin, husband, wife, friend, co-worker – every life that was lost. Everyone who will no longer get to relish the wonderful things that we all take for granted.

And, even in the aftermath of this tragedy, this sorrow, and this time of healing, I think each and every one of us should do one of the most important things that any of us could ever do. The very thing I did this morning.

I called my grandfather – a United States Navy Veteran, a Pearl Harbor Survivor, a World War II Veteran, and the greatest man I have ever known…

I called him and said “Thank you”.

Wildfires In Texas Near Austin Costs Homes, Lives

I watch the news and after hearing about the fires around Texas, especially the Austin area, it breaks my heart to hear that there are some people who have already lost their lives. Not that long ago around my area there were some massive wildfires that were deliberately set that consumed thousands of acres, homes, and lives. A lot of these homes were all around some of our family, we were lucky that our families homes were saved, even though people that had lived around them for decades suddenly lost everything.

But even though their home was saved, the flames got a few feet from their house. Since the fires went on for days, everything in and around their home still smells like smoke. We have been cleaning and scrubbing everything, trying to air out the smell. I know that there were some homes that have fire damage to buildings, furniture, clothing, and other items in and around their home and I have seen a few of them use some of the fire damage restoration companies.

I also have some friends in the Austin area that haven’t lost their homes or may have lot a little bit of their home, but not everything. It can be devastating and it is hard to move on and rebuild when everything still smells like fire and smoke. Motor Monkey – Review

So, normally I will give anything a shot to play it through at least a couple of levels until I can form a better opinion on the game. But, this time, well, I did not make it past the first level before I knew that this was one of the worst games that I have ever played – for several reasons.

Game Basics – You are the Motor Monkey and your whole goal in life is to protect cars from Sludge by using Castrol Syntex… yes, the company actually had someone make a game for motor oil. You move the monkey by the arrow keys on the keyboard, use space to jump, z to fire a Sludge killer, and x to gather and use the oil on the car at the end of the area – if you make it there.

You have to get from one end of the level to the other, jumping over cars, onto buildings, and avoiding the black hole in the middle of the street. There are awnings, poles, and other items that you have to watch out for, as hitting them will make you lose a bit of health. If you lose all of your health, you die. You fall in the black hole in the street, you die. You hit a Sludge, you die… you get the point.

But the game itself runs so slow that you cannot avoid most of these things. I never made it through to the end of the level as it didn’t matter what I did, I always got hit by something or fell in that stinkin’ hole. Plus, I was not impressed that the game was a shameless plug for motor oil, and it was not even a good game.

I’m even less impressed that FreeOnlineGames.com has this as their #1 game on their top 40 list. I guess that money can buy you good spots online and on web sites. But, from a gamer’s point of view – this just is not cool.

Graphics – The graphics are alright. They have decent detail and the lines are not too blurry. So, whoever did the game overall, did a decent job with them. Of course, the Castrol oil bottles are the clearest and sharpest things that you can see in the game, and everything else kind of takes a back seat. The graphics are really the only thing that makes me put this game at a 2 instead of a 1.

Overall, I’m giving Motor Monkey a 2 out of 5 just because it is a terrible game, saved only by its graphics. I would not recommend that you even waste your time playing it.

Paradise Pet Salon – Review

As I am always on my daily quests for games to review, I decided to go ahead and review Paradise Pet Salon for you loyal readers this week. I have played this game before, and it’s just “ok” for me. I really neither love it or hate it – I think mostly because it just is like too many other strategy games out there in the PC gaming market today. But, here is my user’s review of Paradise Pet Salon, which you can check out on Yahoo! Games and Shockwave.com.

Game Basics – In Paradise Pet Salon, you are a pet salon owner who is trying to make a name for herself by providing the best possible service for your clients. You start off with your salon, which is pretty close to bare, except for one washing station and one grooming station. There are no chairs for clients, and no other stations to service pets on. Your goal is to raise money every day, without losing clients, so that you can afford bigger and better things for your salon. For example, there is a vet station, more washing stations, more grooming stations, and so forth. You can also purchase chairs for your clients to sit on while they wait, which helps their attitude toward you and the salon while you work on their pets, and you can also upgrade your shop with wallpaper and flooring to make the customers happier as well.

There is plenty of excitement in the game to keep you going, and the further along you get, the more there is to do. So, for those who like these types of sim games, along the same lines as Diner Dash and Cake Mania, then this might just be a game that you truly enjoy. It is fast paced yet fun enough to keep you playing. Even though I can not say that I loved it or hate it, it is pretty fun and I would play it again.

Graphics – The graphics in Paradise Pet Salon are pretty good for a PC sim strategy game. They are better than the original Diner Dash, and are on par with Cake Mania and some of the other sim strategy games. The pets and the people are pretty detailed, and it is fun to watch the pets move and shake off the water while they are getting groomed. Overall, whoever did the graphics did a pretty good job of creating the pets and the game as well, which does make it a little bit more fun to play.

Overall, I give Paradise Pet Salon a solid 4 out of 5 because the game is very well designed and the graphics are good.

Hearts of Iron The Card Game for PC Hits Beta

Class Guide: Bear Shaman In AoC

First, this is still a healing or support class – not a tanking class. While you can play this class as a DPS class, it is still not it’s main goal and you will find yourself overwhelmed if you try to simply go with the DPS version. But, the good thing about this healing/support class is that this is the only one that can wear medium armor, which gives you more defense and protection than other healing classes. The downside – you have less of a mana pool than others do. So, you’ll find your mana draining faster than normal.

Bear Shamans only have a couple of types of weapons that they can use, which are one-handed or two-handed blunt weapons. Of course, this is another major downfall of the class when it’s compared to other classes. But, you have to keep in mind that even though this will not do as much damage as other weapon types, the Bear Shaman can easily heal themselves while they are fighting versus other classes that cannot, but get to use better weapons. Of course, the main class that you’ll have problems defeating with the Bear Shaman are any type of archers, as you have no access to thrown weapons at all to deal with them.

Shaman Skills and Feats

When it comes to this class, you’ll find that one of the main things you need to overcome is learning what skills are the best for both the class and your playing style. Now, this can be a bit tough for this class, as you need to know if you prefer PvP or PvE more and you will also need to think about who you will be grouping with the most – such as other massive tanks, other support classes, DPS, and so on.

Normally, I recommend for this class that you try to keep a balance between being a good healer, damage dealer, and support class (or those that can throw out a buff like no one’s business). So, to do this, you will have to get your skills in each of the different feat categories. Now, since you’re normally going to be playing with other gamers in AoC, you want to make sure that you don’t get too many of the defense passive abilities/feats because they won’t help you near as much as if you are to get some of the better buffs for your groups. So, you need to stick with the mana passive abilities/feats first, as they will help with the mana regen since this class has a low mana pool, then head on to the heals and buffs that you can use the most on your groups. Once you have these balanced out, start adding in the damage dealing feats and you will find that you’ll come out with a well balanced Bear Shaman that is ready for any fight.

Bear Shaman Strategies

This is a unique class in that you have to know it to play it well – but you can only learn it well by playing it. But, have no fear. You can learn enough about this class to be able to start playing well and build your skills and knowledge up.

First thing, remember that this class can use medium armor and use it, use it, use it. It doesn’t matter which type of play you prefer (PvP or PvE) or what group you’re in or where you are. By using the highest armor you can for your level, you will be able to ward off some of those defensive areas that might be lower than others on your toon. Since your mana isn’t always that high, you want to take advantage of any armor buffs that you can find here as well, as this will help you in battle.

When it comes to weapons, you want to pair a one-handed blunt with a sheild always. While the two-handed will do a bit more damage, you need that extra defense that the sheild will give you on top of your armor. With a sheild, you’ll be able to take some damage while you deal it and healing spells out.

Next, when you’re in a group where you have a main tank or damage dealers, you want to try to switch to cloth armor that will give you mana buffs. Again – this goes back to the low mana pool that you have to begin with. And, if you are the healer or support person in the group, you need all the mana you can get. So, you want to always have a good set of cloth armor with you that you can wear to help you out in this situation. Personally, I keep a set of cloth and a set of medium armor on me at all times just for this reason. That way, I can use the cloth when I need the mana or healing buffs and use the other when I need the defense (such as for soloing).

And, you need to keep in mind that no matter what type of group you are in, you aren’t really supposed to be the main healer for the group. You should be a support and damage dealer. But, if there are no other healers around or in the group, you will be expected to be the main healer. So, you need to be sure that you know how to heal, how to switch from group member to member, and how to ensure that everyone stays alive in a pinch. You will end up with a ton of action during a fight, but it will be worth it in the end.

The challenge is fairly simple – players must create a new character within the event period of June 1st – 30th, 2011. Once the character reaches level 65, head inside the Tower of Giovanni to the Prison Despero entrance for a brief photo shoot. Send the screen shot to “Mail Inquiry” within the game to enter, but be quick because only the first three players to do so will win a prize!
