End of the World Prophecies: Natural Disasters

Natural disasters are something that just cannot be avoided here on Earth. With the weather, changing land conditions, and man-made problems, there seems to be natural disasers all around us here on Earth (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natural_disaster). But, some natural disasters don’t occur here on Earth, instead, they occur in space and can affect the Earth, depending on the magnitude of the disaster. Natural disasters are something that humankind has always lived with, and will always have to fight. But, these natural disasters are yet one more piece in the end of the world puzzle that some scholars have created theories about and spill out doomsday advice for those people who believe them.

While natural disasters have always been a favorite of the “Armageddon” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armageddon) prophecies, they are also a favorite of the chaos theorists as well. Natural disasters hit every year, in different countries around the world, but some scholars believe that there are different events that can, and will, occur that will cause a mass extinction of the people on the planet, or even cause the destruction of planet Earth itself.

Early scientists like Albert Einstein (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albert_einstein) helped the scientific community to theorize and explore different possibilities when it came to the end of the world. This began with the noted scientist’s theory of relativity. This one theory can be used to theorize the destruction of the planet and the universe on a major scale. Since there are so many different ways that this theory can play out, there are many different theories about the end of the world and when it will happen.

Other theorists have used different scales to calculate when the end of the world will occur. Some have used the average matter density that occurs in the universe naturally to create three different possibilities that theorize then end of the world, and sometimes the universe, all based on the different ratios of the matter density of the universe and what the Omega factor is. These theories have all been named, and they are the Flat, Open, and Closed universes. Basically, these three different theories discuss the basic geometry of the entire universe, and not just the curve of space and time that are caused by smaller items in the universe, like other stars, planets, and galaxies.

These theories were further compounded by the noted astronomer, Edwin Hubble (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edwin_Hubble), when he released his theories after studying the different stars in other galaxies and finding that the universe was expanding. This caused a whole new way to theorize the end of the world and the universe, since now scientists had actual evidence that there was movement in the larger bodies in the universe. From this simple research, there have been several end of the world theories that have gained popularity throughout the world, which include: the Big Bang theory, the Steady State theory, and another view that takes into account the microwave radiation that flows through the universe.

Just from Einstein’s theory of relativity, at a time when the entire scientific community believed in a “static universe” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Static_universe), created such an uproar in the thought that the universe was expanding. Then, with the research of Hubble, proving Einstein correct, prompted the theory that if the universe is expanding, then is can also end up contracting as well, sometime in the future. Added to this new theory, is another Einsteinian theory called “cosmological constants” that, in essence, offset the way that gravity effects the entire universe so that the universe would continue to stay static. But, after the research and conclusion by Hubble, Einstein was forced to retract this theory and admit to it being a great “blunder” on his part. With the newest telescopes out today and more of a focus on the cosmos than ever before, there is a whole new genre of scientists that are studying the universe and the theories that go along with the end of the world. By studying supernovae in other galaxies, some scientists think that the universe is expanding at a more rapid rate than ever before, thus adding to the panic of some doomsdayers that one of their predictions will come true sooner than later.
